September 26, 2023 (Bemidji, MN) – A new scholarship has been established in honor of Jim Carrington, former sports editor of the Bemidji Pioneer and longtime youth baseball coach.
The Jim Carrington Memorial Scholarship Fund, a component fund of the Northwest Minnesota Foundation (NMF), will support students from Bemidji High School who have participated in at least one year of high school athletics. Preference will be given to athletes who have participated in baseball, softball, or wrestling. Eligible applicants will be high school graduating seniors, as well as those who are pursuing their second, third, or fourth year of post-secondary education.
The scholarship was established by the trustees of the estate of Jim Carrington to honor his memory and assist students from Bemidji who have a passion for athletics, just as the late Jim Carrington did himself. Jim was a long-time sports editor for the Bemidji Pioneer, as well as a youth baseball coach and avid supporter of BHS wrestling.
“Jim’s dedication to youth sports in Bemidji was undeniable” said Dan Christenson, one of trustees of the Carrington estate. “The impact Jim has on athletics in Bemidji will live on with this scholarship”.
Applications will be available in the BHS Career Center and also online through the NMF website, www.nwmf.org. An application will include transcripts and two letters of recommendation, as well as a short essay regarding community involvement, volunteer activities, extra-curricular activities and work experience.
Scholarship applications will be accepted Feb. 1, 2024, through April 15, 2024.
