Forty years is a long time.
Long enough for children to grow up, raise families of their own, and maybe become grandparents. Long enough for a quiet idea shared around a kitchen table to grow into a main street business that employs half the town. Long enough for a local community fund to become a permanent wellspring for future generations. And long enough for communities to change, new leaders to step forward, and neighbors to keep finding reasons to fall in love with Northwest Minnesota all over again.
Forty years ago, during a challenging chapter for rural Minnesota, the Northwest Minnesota Foundation began with a simple belief that still grounds everything we do, that the people closest to a community understand its challenges, its hopes, and its possibilities best.
The real experts on Northwest Minnesota were already here—working family farms, running main street shops, teaching in classrooms, leading in Tribal nations, and sitting around kitchen tables asking a simple, powerful question:
What can we do about this—together?
Today, September 30, 2026, as we gather at the Sanford Center in Bemidji to mark our 40th anniversary, we aren’t celebrating a date on the calendar or an institution. We are celebrating four decades of community strength—and we are writing to thank you, because you are the ones who made it possible.
This anniversary belongs to you
If you have ever started a business, served on a board, volunteered on a committee, supported a hometown fund, made a donation, worked as part of our staff, applied for a grant, or turned a good idea into local action—this milestone belongs to you!
If you advocate for child care, housing, elder care, young people, or economic opportunity in your town, it belongs to you!
If you were the person willing to ask the tough question, bring folks together, or say, “What if we tried?”—it belongs to you, too!
Behind every loan, grant, scholarship, disaster relief check, and regional partnership are people. People willing to begin. People willing to stay. People willing to believe that Northwest Minnesota is worth investing in.
Rooted in community
For four decades, we have had the deep privilege of walking alongside remarkable people across Red Lake Nation, White Earth Nation, and the 12 counties of Northwest Minnesota.
We have watched main street entrepreneurs take brave leaps. We have seen volunteers give up their evenings and weekends for years on end simply because something mattered enough to keep showing up. We have worked alongside child care providers, nonprofit leaders, Tribal elders, educators, and local officials who understand their hometowns deeply and do the quiet, hard work of making them stronger every day.
Their communities are different. Their needs are different. And that diversity is our region’s greatest power.
Our role as a foundation has been to listen, connect, invest, and help bring people and resources together.
Built by many hands
The work of these past forty years has taken a thousand different shapes:
- A business owner receiving the initial financing to open their doors.
- A local organization finding the funding to respond to a sudden community need.
- A donor creating a legacy fund for the town that raised them.
- A student discovering a new horizon through a local scholarship.
- Neighbors coming together to rebuild after a disaster.
The programs evolve, and the generations shift, but one thread connects them all—local people choosing to invest in our shared future!
That includes our early founders and partners, our past and present board members and staff who stewarded the mission, the donors who trusted local communities with their generosity, and the countless partners who turned dollars into real-world change. It also includes the people whose names may never appear in a formal report, but whose quiet dedication changed a classroom, a shop, a neighborhood, or a family.
Forty years of impact could never belong to just one organization. Many hands built it!
The next chapter is ours to write
Our 40th anniversary invites us to look back with deep gratitude, but it also calls us to look forward.
Northwest Minnesota still faces big questions around child care, affordable housing, elder care, workforce needs, and rural resilience. No single organization has all the answers—and after 40 years, that may be the most important lesson we’ve learned. The best solutions emerge when we listen to one another, bring different life experiences to the same table, and trust local people to shape what comes next.
So today, we want to say thank you!
To the business owner unlocking the front door before sunrise. To the volunteer stacking chairs after everyone else has gone home. To the donor quietly making something possible behind the scenes. To the teacher encouraging a young person to dream bigger. To the elder carrying wisdom forward. And to the neighbor who saw something that needed doing—and stepped up to do it.
You are the story of Northwest Minnesota!
