A $10,000 grant to White Earth Tribal & Community College helped fund a project to promote health and wellbeing within White Earth Nation. This funding was provided through the NMF Emergency Disaster Recovery Fund.
The project – titled “Taking Care of our Elders” – was developed at the request of tribal elders to address food security and support their health and wellbeing. Elders were able to grow the produce they like to eat and need while providing opportunity for healthy physical activity.
Funding supported the construction of installation of raised garden beds that were accessible by elders throughout White Earth.
“Food insecurity can only be addressed when the community takes an active role in growing their own food,” states Lisa Brunner, Community Extension Service and Cultural Department Director with White Earth Tribal & Community College. “Our role is to help with soil health, plant knowledge, and provide resources on how to grow and preserve their food which can lead to healthier outcomes for our community.”
One of the primary goals of the White Earth Tribal & Community College Extension Service is to promote a practical level of food literacy by providing teachings and activities that enhance food security for youth, families, and community.
