Investing in youth through housing support
Deb Zak’s experience working alongside youth has shaped her commitment to supporting young adults today – particularly through access to safe, stable housing. That’s what led her to donate to the Youth Mitigation Fund, through the Northwest Minnesota Foundation’s Impact Fund.
“Looking at the impact of homelessness on youth, if they don’t have a safe place to live, it’s harder to go to school or imagine a strong future,” she said. “Their basic need is safety, having a safe place to live. I appreciate that the Northwest Minnesota Foundation is addressing that need.”
Deb is retired from the University of Minnesota Extension, through which she coordinated a 20-year program for White Earth Nation youth. The program, a partnership between Extension and White Earth, helped strengthen math and science skills through natural resource education and cultural connections.
Over the years, Deb got to know the youth and their stories. So when she learned about the Youth Mitigation Fund, it struck a chord.
“I felt a real draw to this work,” she said. “I wanted to be part of it.”
The Youth Mitigation Fund helps young adults ages 16 to 24 who are ready to be housed but need additional support. Participants commit to education and oversight, while landlords agree to work collaboratively with tenants and housing service providers. In return, landlords can access financial support in cases of property damage or lost rent.
“I think this fund is very appropriately aligned with our work in housing, and rightfully focused on addressing unmet needs for youth,” said Deb, who is also a member of the NMF Board of Directors.
As a donor, Deb stays connected to the fund’s progress. She’s met with program officers to better understand how the model brings together landlords, service providers, and young tenants in shared partnership.
“I love that it’s a whole support network,” she said, “that it’s about education and additional assistance. It’s a great program.”
