The new playground at Solway Elementary was constructed to ensure that all children are able to gather and play together without barriers.
The Play and Learn for All Abilities Fund (PLAA) raised enough donations to cover the costs needed to install an additional playground space with accessible surfacing and equipment to accommodate various mobility challenges.
The playground was built last summer, promoting inclusive, collaborative plan for Solway Elementary students.
“This playground allows children who use devices like wheelchairs, walkers, or crutches to access the space independently and play collaboratively with their peers,” PLAA reported. “At the elementary level, all types of children need movement and peer interaction to learn and develop their growing bodies and minds.”
PLAA, which was funded three years ago, is dedicated to replacing the playground surfaces and equipment on playgrounds throughout Bemidji Area Schools.
“Our (fund’s) mission is to make sure that all children have access to this important developmental activity,” PLAA reported. “Play is learning and too many children are restricted from those experiences by the lack of access to their school’s playground.”
