A grant from the Warroad Area Community Fund helped support LSS Meals in serving 13,915 meals to 296 unduplicated seniors in their community, according to a final grant report.
LSS Meals, provided by Lutheran Social Service of Minnesota, applied for the grant to support its efforts in providing meals to low-income seniors.
“By keeping seniors healthy and in their homes, we were able to enhance their quality of life while saving thousands in private and public dollars,” LSS Meals wrote in the final grant report.
Participating seniors were surveyed at the conclusion of the grant period, with results showing that:
- 90% felt the meals and socialization improved their health.
- 94% felt the meals and socialization helped them, or made it easier for them, to stay in their homes.
- 90% said they would recommend LSS Meals to a friend.
One individual, over the age of 70, shared that they lived on a fixed income and going to the dining center allowed them to have a nutritious meal while socializing with friends.
“Sometimes near the end of the month, I don’t have anything left after paying for my medications,” they said. “I like that it is confidential and nobody knows what I contribute. I know I am eating better and I am much healthier because of these meals.”
